Trip Report: Thai First Class, Tokyo to Bangkok

I recently reviewed Thai’s First Class, and at that time, did not have a very enjoyable experience. I decided to give them another go. To my delight, my new experience with their First Class from Tokyo to Bangkok on a A380, proved to be very enjoyable.

I relaxed in the ANA Suite Lounge, which like everything with ANA, was disappointing. There was very little food, and what was available wasn’t very tasty. Although it was comfortable, the WiFi was very slow, and the lounge was a schlep to the boarding gate. I’ve heard wonderful things about the United Global First Lounge in Tokyo, but I didn’t end up scoping it out.

After an hour delay, I was boarded first through a separate gate bridge. I was warmly greeted and escorted to my seat. The purser made an effort to chit chat with me, which was appreciated. He poured me a glass of Dom, and we shortly took off for Bangkok.

The new Thai First Class seats on the A380 are nice, but are definitely showing wear and tear. The seat was comfortable, and the TV screen was excellent. However, the plastic on the armrest was broken and I could see the interior wiring. Because this was a “shorthaul” (a 6 hour shorthaul!), there were no PJs or caviar service. However, there were Rimowa amenity kits, which I always keep wrapped in plastic to sell on eBay for $80-120.

The bathroom on the A380 is massive. There’s a sitting area, and more than enough room to do whatever one does in a bathroom. On the other side, where Emirates places a second bathroom, Thai places a “lounge.” Frankly, it’s a waste of space. There’s no bar, the seats there are uncomfortable, and nobody during the flight, except for the FAs, used it. They should convert it to a second bathroom, or turn it into lockers to replace the overhead bins to create a more airy feeling to the cabin.

"Sitting room" in Thai's bathroom - dude, this was big... it was thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis big!

The food was great. Very fresh, and very tasty. The FAs were extremely fun, chatting with me, taking photos, and constantly refilling my drink. It was a really fun flight that just flew by. Unfortunately, I was pretty exhausted and fell asleep for a good while, missing out on the great service.

Nice table for yum yums (and the garlic bread was d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!)

My previous experience with Thai was ‘meh.’ This time was excellent, and I’m excited to travel with them again in the future.

      1. Hi and thanks for the prompt response. Do you have any post regarding aeroplane miles program or know any post about it,if so would you mind to please share the link to it.
So what is your route and itinerary looks like from Canada to Australia? How many stopovers or open jaws do you get by redeeming aeroplane miles?
Thanks for sharing your award booking service but actually I’m in tight budget now, but me and my wife are planning to do app o rama soon and we can pay you back by using your affiliate links to apply for the cards so you get commissions for it. Please email me or I can email you if you drop your email here. Thanks again!

        1. My routing from Canada to Australia, on the way there, was Ottawa-Washington-Tokyo-Bangkok-Melbourne. On the way back, I did Sydney-San Francisco-Toronto.

You’re allowed two stop overs + your destination with Aeroplan, however, you can substitute one stopover for an open jaw.

There’s no one post that explains Aeroplan. However, if you were to use my website’s search function, and search “Aeroplan,” hopefully helpful content shows up.

  2. Hi,

Appreciate if you can please kindly help us with our question above. Me and my wife are about to do our app o rama soon and would like to use your referral link but we need your help first before we can apply cards using your affiliate link.
