Amex Platinum Canada Spending Requirement Going Up in Two Days!

Since I’ve started this “game”, the American Express Platinum spending requirement has always been $1,000 in three months to get the sign-up bonus. According to MilesOpedia, that spending requirement is TRIPLING to $3,000 on March 23rd.

Right now, the promotion is 60,000 Membership Rewards (convertible 1:1 to Aeroplan) after spending $1,000 in three months. You also get two $200 travel credits, easily converted into cash. While the annual fee is $699, your effective fee is $299 after the travel credits – a phenomenal value for 60,000 points (worth conservatively $1,000). You also get complimentary lounge access, insurance, hotel status, etc.

American Express is starting to target churning activities – in the US, they directly came out and said so. It’s clear that the same phenomena is happening in Canada. An increase in spending requirements by three times is huge, and I wouldn’t be surprised if bonuses also come down at the same time. If you’d have difficulty spending $3,000 in three months, I’d recommend that you get this card now for the bonus while the spending requirement is low.

  1. They have increased spendings on the Gold Reward and the SPG card from $500 to $1,500 with and notice before, how do you know they’re planning to increase the Platinum card?

  2. They have increased spendings on the Gold Reward and the SPG card from $500 to $1,500 without any notice before, how do you know they’re planning to increase the Platinum card?

  3. Noooooo! I’m already having trouble meeting the $1500 minimum spend on my Amex Gold, and now I have to find a quick way to spend another $1000?

    Any suggestions?

  4. This is good, hopefully the spending requirements will increase and keep the bonuses intact. Much better than the other way around.

  5. Has anyone been denied application? After churning Amex for the last 5 years, I think I’ve finally hit a block. Not only was I denied the Amex SPG a couple of months ago, I now got denied with the Amex Plat. I called and asked for a reason why and they said they weren’t able to say.

    Anyone else in my boat?

  6. Amex Churner: “Why was I denied? Why can’t I get another card?!?”
Amex: “We think it’s best if we go our separate ways, eh?”
Amex Churner: NO! Why? I don’t understand! Was it something I did?”
Amex: “Look, this is really hard for us, too. But just know, it’s not you, it’s us.”

LOL, j/k. I have the Amex Plat (here in the States), and plan to cancel before the 1-year anniversary (and next US $450 annual fee) hits next month. The Amex Plat is/was okay, but the Chase Sapphire Reserve is better in almost every respect.

  7. I have the personal AMEX Gold Card and got the bonus MR points of 25k. Can I cancel it and upgrade to the personal Plat and get the bonus points? Or is the One In a Lifetime policy being enforced?

    1. Yesterday… bonus is still the same, just spending requirement went up. Should apply now in case of a future devaluation!

      1. Ok, is there any harm in applying for both the personal plat and the bus plat at the same time for should I stagger them a few months apart?

        1. No problem at all – if your credit is good, first app will probably be approved, and second app likely pending (approved 1-2 days later). Always appreciate when my links are used 🙂 Good luck!
