You can once again book Copa award flights using Aeroplan.
LOT airlines (Star Alliance) is offering a great deal between Toronto YYZ and Stockholm ARN, connecting in Warsaw WAW for $526CAD. There seems to be excellent availability after September 1st.
Copa Airlines, a South American Star Alliance airline, hasn’t been bookable on Aeroplan for a while. They’re a pretty good airline for award availability, and Aeroplan doesn’t charge fuel surcharges (YQ) on them. Aeroplan has been the only Star Alliance frequent flyer program that hasn’t been able to book Copa flights. Throughout the year, there have been short periods, in terms of hours, that Copa has been bookable. Right now, Copa is bookable. This could be a permanent fix to the issue, or could be short lasting.
Although these aren't stunning fares, Ottawans will know how expensive flights to Asia are from Ottawa, and anything under the $900 mark is pretty good (darn Torontonians and their major international airport!!).
Right now, you can fly between Ottawa YOW and Singapore SIN; Ho Chi Minh City SGN; Bangkok BKK; Hong Kong HKG and Shanghai PVG for between $670-$740 round-trip, taxes included.
This past July, I spoke how about to get Star Alliance Gold status quickly, and how to maintain it easily with Aegean Airlines. With the old program, all you had to do to maintain the status was to credit one flight, any flight, to your Aegean account, and your Star Alliance Gold status would be maintained for another 36 month period.
Aegean Airlines is a Star Alliance partner airline based out of Greece. There’s nothing remarkable about the airline itself, and it doesn’t even fly to North America. However, they have the most generous status granting mechanism out of any Star Alliance partner airline.
