Free Year of Equifax (Premier) Credit Monitoring

I’ve spoken before about how to get your credit report for free. I’ve also said that you shouldn’t waste your money on online credit monitoring services. However, if you believe that you’ve used a credit card at Home Depot after April 1, 2014 (note: you don’t have to supply any proof, or even a declaration), you’re eligible for one year of free Equifax Premier Credit Monitoring, which allows you to update your credit report and see your consumer disclosure score on a daily basis.

New Card: The American Express AeroplanPlus Reserve Card – It’s $899 and it ain’t worth it.

American Express just released a new credit card: The American Express AeroplanPlus Reserve Card (this is not a referral). It has an $899 annual fee, and a 50,000 Aeroplan Point sign-up bonus after spending $3,000 in 3 months. Frankly, it’s a terrible offer.

I recently posted how you can get 25,000 Aeroplan miles, first year free, and $50 with GreatCanadianRebates. RedFlagDeals, a Canadian consumer deals website, is currently offering the same deal, but with $85 cash back. You will get 15,000 Aeroplan points with your first purchase, and an additional 10,000 Aeroplan points after spending $1,000 on the card within 90 days from the date of being approved.

Starwood Preferred Guest ("SPG") points are extremely valuable. They transfer 1:1 to a number of airline partners, which provides extreme flexibility, and if you transfer 20,000 points at a time, you get a 5,000 point bonus, which means an effective 1:1.25 transfer rate. Further, SPG points can be used at thousands of Starwood properties, which includes some great budget options at 2,000 points per night, and some extremely luxurious properties that would be otherwise unaffordable. Further, if you redeem four nights on points, the fifth night is free. All in all, SPG points are one of the most valuable points options out there.
