(Small) Aeroplan Pricing Glitch with Premium Economy

A reader sent me an email about a glitch he’s been having searching for flights on Aeroplan (and I got his permission to post about it). It seems that if there’s a Premium Economy segment on one end, and a Business segment on the other, the entire itinerary prices as a Premium Economy redemption. Now, there’s not a whole lot of benefit out of this, although if there’s an affected routing that you were considering booking anyways, this can save you points.

Aeroplan Economy Booking and Seat Selection Fees are a Mistake

I recently made an award booking with Aeroplan, flying on Air Canada. The system automatically assigned me a middle seat (yuck!), so I went to Air Canada’s website to change my seat. For some weird reason, the system attempted to charge me to select a normal, non-privilege seat. Being the cheap guy that I am, I Tweeted Air Canada and got this response:

Aeroplan to US Airways Dividend Miles on Points.com GONE :(

I’ve written extensively on how you can convert Aeroplan points to US Airways Dividend Miles (USDM) at a 1:0.84 ratio. USDM miles offered excellent value, with interesting routing options, no fuel surcharges, and the option of waiting to convert them to AAdvantage miles with the US/AA merger.  Unfortunately, the option to convert Aeroplan to USDM has disappeared from Points.com. This isn’t too surprising as the merger is coming soon, however, it would have been nice to have some notice. This was the only valuable option that Points.com offered, which I would now consider as a very poor tool in terms of value.

Copa flights available on Aeroplan – maybe for a short time!

Copa Airlines, a South American Star Alliance airline, hasn’t been bookable on Aeroplan for a while. They’re a pretty good airline for award availability, and Aeroplan doesn’t charge fuel surcharges (YQ) on them. Aeroplan has been the only Star Alliance frequent flyer program that hasn’t been able to book Copa flights. Throughout the year, there have been short periods, in terms of hours, that Copa has been bookable. Right now, Copa is bookable. This could be a permanent fix to the issue, or could be short lasting.

What is the value of an Aeroplan point?

Aeroplan points are a pseudo-currency, and can be converted into something tangible. When making “purchasing” decisions, it’s a good idea to know what the value of your currency is. That is, is an Aeroplan point worth 1 cent, 1.8 cents, etc. Of course, the value of a point will be different for every person: if your goal with Aeroplan points is to redeem for hotels or a toaster, the value of a point will be much lower than if you redeem for First Class international travel.
